Rackheath history and NDR archaeology displays A fascinating and poignant glimpse into the past is being offered at Rackheath’s Holy Trinity Church tomorrow (Sat 1 Oct – 11am to 2.30pm Salhouse Road, NR13 6PD) when a display of archaeological finds from the route of Norwich Northern Distributor Road will be supplemented by archive material, local records, and earlier finds from the parish held by Norfolk Museums Service. The display is being held to help mark another significant day for Rackheath when the new village sign, painted by local artist Jessica Perry, will be unveiled outside Holy Trinity Church (11am). The sign is a cast resin copy of the original wooden sign put up in 1983 to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It was removed last year because it had rotted beyond repair. Included in the archaeology display will be fuselage fragments, a camera tag and the crumpled nosecone of a WWII USAAF Mustang that crashed at Rackheath in 1945 after an ill-advised attempt to join an aerobatic display celebrating the 200th mission by the 467th Bomb Group. The pilot, Robert C. Young, was killed. Chris Collins of the Rackheath Aggies 467th commemoration group will be present to answer questions about the incident and the USAAF’s time based at Rackheath. The story featured on the front of the Norwich Evening News in August. Far more ancient reminders of Norfolk’s deep history will also be on view, including Neolithic flints, a Bronze Age beaker found in Rackheath, and more recent evidence of Roman occupation and medieval industry along the NDR route.
